About Shamica

I didn’t come to this work with all the answers. I came with better questions.

I’m Shamica Baxter: life coach, host, speaker, writer, and the voice behind Dear Shamica. I help people get honest about their lives, their relationships and themselves, and then do something with that honesty.

My story

Nobody handed me the map.

I grew up in Memphis without much, and I learned early that if I wanted a different life, I’d have to figure out how to build it. I became the first in my family to graduate from college, earning a degree in psychology and communications from Tennessee State University, and later an Executive MBA.

Being first taught me something I still carry into every conversation: effort matters, but so does knowing what nobody tells you. After college I saw how many capable people get stuck, not because they aren’t smart or willing, but because they’re working without a map. So I started helping people draw one.

Through The Baxter Initiative, I’ve worked with new college graduates trying to break into their fields, and with veterans and people with disabilities navigating real barriers to work. Along the way I found that the career question is almost never just about the career. It’s about confidence, boundaries, family, relationships, and who you believe you’re allowed to become.

Why Dear Shamica

Because the real conversations were happening anyway.

People kept bringing me the same kinds of questions: in workshops, after panels, in my messages at midnight. How do I know if I should stay? Why do I keep choosing the same kind of person? How do I say no to my family without losing them?

Dear Shamica is where those conversations get room to breathe. It’s coaching for the people ready to do the work, letters and articles for the people still thinking it through, and live conversations for everyone who needs to hear that they’re not the only one.

How I work

My approach to growth and relationships

I don’t hand out rules

Relationships and life decisions are shaped by attraction, attachment, capacity, timing, history and a hundred other things. A rule that works for your best friend might be wrong for you. I’d rather help you see your situation clearly.

I start with you

Most relationship questions are also questions about the person asking. Your patterns, your expectations and your boundaries are the parts you can actually change, so that’s where we look first.

I care about follow-through

Insight feels good, but it doesn’t change much on its own. Coaching with me is honest and warm, and it’s also practical: small steps, kept promises, and accountability without shame.

In the room

Facilitating conversations that matter.

Some of my favorite work happens with a microphone and a room full of people: panels, workshops and community conversations where people can finally say the quiet part out loud.

Love Lust Sacrifice is one of those conversations: a live, candid panel series about modern love and what we give up for it, presented by The Baxter Initiative. I’ve also hosted goal-setting workshops for young women, including our sold-out Beautiful Dreamers Goal Setting Party, along with workshops on careers and personal development.

Media, hosting & speaking

Interviewer, host, podcaster, speaker.

On my YouTube channel, The Warm Up Diaries, I interview guests and host conversations about relationships, reinvention and real life. I’ve been featured in CanvasRebel and Bold Journey magazines, and I speak and host for organizations that want their audience to leave thinking, and a little braver.

What I believe

The Dear Shamica philosophy

Five ideas that shape every session, letter and conversation.

Nuance over absolutes

Two people can do the same thing for completely different reasons. Context matters.

Growth over performance

Looking fine and being well are not the same thing. We work on the second one.

Conversation over judgment

You can’t get honest in a room where you’re afraid of being judged.

Clarity over confusion

The goal isn’t certainty. It’s seeing your situation well enough to choose.

Perspective over rigid rules

Rules are someone else’s answer. Perspective helps you find your own.

Coaching is not therapy. Shamica is a life coach, not a therapist or licensed mental-health professional. Coaching focuses on the present and the future: clarity, goals and follow-through. It isn’t a substitute for therapy, medical care or legal advice. If you’re working through trauma, a mental-health condition or a crisis, a licensed professional is the right first step, and coaching can sit alongside that care.

Coaching is a space to slow down, get honest about what you want, and build a plan you can actually keep. It starts with a conversation.
